Todays picture: The movie poster of District 9. Great movie, go see it. And it's not the science fiction, which probably man people dislike, which makes the movie great, it's that it talks about racism in a way that you understand, why it is quite hard to recognize or judge it, if you only see the situation from one side.

Went to see District 9 in Metropol with Seba and Maurice. I really liked the film, although the background story or idea is so huge, one could have made much more of it. Maybe a series? Like Firefly?

Preparty at Flo's place with incredibly delicious home-made pizza. Sauce Holondaise really fits good to eveything and tuna-banana wasn't that bad, either. I would definitely do it again.

CCH had his birthday party. Lots of nice people (lots of them from the ultimate frisbee team, because that's where I know CCH from), good drinks, great food. But I knew it would be like that, it was like that last time, too.

After-party in Schocken (where we left because it was just too loud) and Oblomov. Well, the music in Schocken really sucked, but I must have been the only one having that impression. Oblomov was nice, like always. "Every party ends there" or something like that.

Hmm, the whole post looks really strange because the picture overlaps with the next post. Is there something like a box or minipage or whatever, where I can put the picture into that the renderer makes sure, that the post ends only after the picture ends? Or do I have to keep on writing to produce so much text that it looks good again? But, well, since you obviously love what I wrote, I can just continue and continue and continue.
So, what's going on that does not really fit into one of my diary-like posts?

It has been getting cold and wet during the last weeks. And I missed some ultimate frisbee training sessions because of not having the right clothes. I should really go shopping. Our mixed team from ultimate frisbee is the german champion for the second time in a row. Congratulations to all of them. They are going to some tournament in London on one of the next weekends.

After trying to learn a lot for my probability theory exam I finally started to get productive. Yay!

I get two computer magazines sent to my house: IX and Linux Magazin. Usually I have enoughe time to read the most interesting articles before the next edition comes out, but I bought a CT some weeks ago and now I am completely out of schedule.

My computer starts to do funny things. I get a message about some accessibility feature not being present at every boot. If I am at the computer at around half past 10 (or half past 9?) in the morning, it hangs and I have to reboot it. The clock applet in Gnome does not work anymore. The computer hangs from time to time, but only when doing lots of stuff (compiling, email, webbrowser and probably more, all at the same time). Since some time ago another RAM bar died, I definitely have not enough RAM. Less than a GB at the moment. So I'm thinking about getting rid of this complicated Gentoo stuff and installing Fedora. But my machine is some years old and I want a new one. I only need the core parts, motherboard, CPU, fan, RAM, graphics adapter (if it is not onboard). So I'm thinking about buying some 4-core CPU and 4 GB of RAM and some cheap board with integrated graphics adapter (I can upgrade later). But I'll do at least one exam before.

I read this news item about a guy (or actually more than one) building a $150 balloon with camera and GPS and taking pictures of space (the area around earth). I want to do that, too.

I' thinking of getting rid of categories in this blog. They only make sense when they are used consistently, and I don't do that.

I started using F-Spot for organizing my pictures. I also started hating pictures without embedded timestamps. Scans from old photographes, pictures from mobile phone cameras, pictures edited with a tool that removes that stuff. New tools, new restrictions. That's life.

It is from a Blender tutorial, if I remember correctly.

Woke up quite early (although I set no alarm clock). Had a nice breakfast with my family.

Since my mother and sister had to go to the city center to buy some stuff, I prepared lunch. It was quite difficult, french fries and and rissoles (right usage of the word? never heard or used it before) from the freezer, prepared in our brand new Tefal Actifry. It's quite a strange machine, but for making fries and warming stuff up, it's really good. I split the stuff in half because frozen potato sticks need quite a lot of space and there was not enough space for everything. When the fries were warm and soft and there was some room, I added two of the rissoles to try it out. After about 20 minutes the fries were almost done and the rissoles were perfect. I put everything in a big bowl and put in the rest of the fries. Then my mother and sister came back. Then there was enough room for the rest of the rissoles and I added them and suddenly my mother and sister got mad: "What are you doing?" "Why did you do that?" "You can't do it like that!" and stuff like that. Of course, I left everything the way it was. My sister left the kitchen talking about me being so stupid and her eating somewhere else. They were also sure that I made too little fries and were talking about them eating until they were full and me getting the rest, if there was any. So, after 20 minutes the rissoles were perfect, I put them to the first two and put a dish on top of them that they stayed warm. Added the first portion of fries to the Tefal machine thing and voila, 5 minutes later there was tasty lunch. My mother had prepared some salad, too, so it was not only fried and warmed up stuff.

During lunch my brother mentioned that he would go running in half an hour and my sister said that one shouldn't eat 1 1/2 hours before doing sports. I sometimes have problems with my stomach when doing sport, either because I ate too much and too short before the sports session or because I did not eat during the last few hours. So I try to eat a banana or something about one or a half hour before doing sport. I mentioned that and the discussion started, that I was obviously wrong because what my sister said is scientifically proven. She said that. I answered, that this might not be a good phrasing, because eating a little does no harm. I got the answer, that a full meal is not a little, therefore I explained to them, that I was not talking about my brother but about her sentence in general, stating, that one should not eat anything at all, which was obviously wrong in my eyes. At that point my sister had already stopped talking to me and only informed the others that I was obviously too stupid to listen to her and all that. Well, well, I think I would be pissed if I was not used to this. But since she stated that she hated me and that I should please die as soon as possible and never apologized for it, I don't care. It is true, that she knows more about those things, since she just finished her 3-year training to be a dietician, but always being right, not being creative or flexible anymore, not being able to learn new stuff and, which is the most important, not being able to explain what she just said or why she is true, is definitely bad style. There's also no excuse for behaving like an asshole most of the time.

They are taken with my mobile phone camera, therefore the incredible quality.

Another learning day at the university this time with Attila.

We went to our math professor to get a date for our spoken exam, but he was not there.

After that we went to the student organization of the mathematics students and got copies of some earlier exams in probability theory. The professor seems to be quite ok, the questions are almost all about examples and from there he starts talking about theory. A little more to learn because the examples seem to be that important, but a nice style, actually.

We were sitting in some seminar room and learning when we suddenly heard the noise of sirens. A firemen truck was coming and four firemen were running down to the subway station. Then another truck came, then the police, then the ambulance. After about 10 minutes I saw roughly 15 firemen trucks, 2-3 ambulance cars and another 3-5 police cars. We went outside, took some pictures and decided to take a short break. We went to the supermarket and passed the other exit of the subway station. There are lots of ventilation grids there (the big ones on the ground, where you an walk on) and it smelled like burned iron or some fire where there is electricity involved. After about 1-2 hours everybody was gone and it was back to normal. I found the following article about what had happened (in German, unfortunately):

Rauchentwicklung in S-Bahn-Zug

18.09.2009, 14:13 Uhr
Brand in unterirdischer Verkehrsanlage

It was at a restaurant with incredibly good food. Really awesome. It was a Communion of some relative of mine and every four people in the restaurant got a big pan with french fries, swabian noodles, probably some potatoes, lots of vegetables and about 4 different kinds of meat: Beef steak with fried onions, roulade made from pork meat with speck and bread dumpling made from bread and chicken meat, about 50:50.

Went to university to get some stuff done. Learned some more of my probabiliy lecture during the day. I can be quite productive, if I want to get some things done.

A little dry but very good pork steak with mushrooms and swabian noodles for lunch. You just have to know what is edible at university and what not.

Went to Juern to get my contract for next semester done. I'll be earning money again, soon. Yay!

First dancing lesson of this school year. Some rumba. Quite boring if you know almost everything.

Indian chicken curry for lunch, and great ice cream from our local ice cream parlor (the one next to the construction site, not the bad one next to the big bus station).

Organizing our fall camp with the scouts group from Heumaden. Everything seems to e so complicated, but I'm really looking forward to it.

Discussion about which servers we will buy for bawue.net. Not sure what it will be, since there are more people who will decide this, but I favor the AMD 6-core CPUs, 2 Sockel Servers with 1 CPU, 16 GB RAM and room for another 16 GB and 2 cheap harddrives with RAID 1. We don't need more harddisk space, we have our nice iSCSI storage server.

The dancing school where I spend my tuesday evenings and also some sundays decided to rent the sky beach cafe/club/bar/whatever for this years back to school party. Not sure, if I'll go there. Dancing is quite boring if there is nobody to dance with you and I don't have a positive answer from anybody yet. [Update:] Of course there was a misunderstanding and of course the party was not at sky beach but at the usual location. It was too cold. But it was quite nice, I won some bag and I'm not sure if I will ever use it.

Markus is back from Oslo for a week and he asked some people to go drink beer with him tonight. Not sure if I'll combine this with the dancing, do it instead of dancing or don't go there at all. We'll see. [Update:] I called Markus at about 10 PM, they were in Adulis. Went there, drank some whisk(e)y (I have to memorize the brand so that I don't order it again), later we walked around a bit, tried to buy some ice cream but failed.
